Pelts (2010)

 ★★½☆☆

A sub-Friday 13th film of backwoods slashers. It should be really bad, but some good characters and amusing script writing makes it watchable. No real tension though, which is its major flaw.

The Last Exorcism (2010)

 ★★★☆☆

Not as bad a film as people say, yes we’re all a little tired of the faux documentary film but putting that aside this is a slightly better example than some. The problem with it is the last ten minutes or so where a “cultist” kind of direction is taken, up till then I thought it worked fairly well.

The Four Horsemen (2009)

 ★★★½☆

Fairly good “Seven” style cop thriller/horror starring the always dependable Dennis Quaid. Theres a few plot holes here and there, but if you can be “selective” in what you see then this is not a bad film of the type. Good atmosphere and acting versus a slightly messy script.

House (2008)

 ★★½☆☆

Rather enjoyable mess of a movie that, if it hadn’t of been based on a book, I would say was a remake of the far superior 1986 movie (there are a lot of thematic similarities). Not really a “bad” film though, but I wouldn’t advise viewing unless you’re in a rather undemanding mood.

Jennifers Body (2009)

 ★★★☆☆

This film had a funny script, but wasn’t played for laughs as much as it should have been. It smacks of a missed opportunity to me, it should have been something akin to “Idle Hands” in its approach. Either the director didn’t know how to set the necessary tone, or there was some post production tampering; it could be either, the production company was FOX (well known for their tampering) and the director was Karyn Kusama, who made “Aeon Flux” (enough said, though in fairness she also did the excellent “Girlfight”).

Ghosts Don’t Exist (2010)

 ★★☆☆☆

The premise is in many ways similar to “The Last Exorcism”, a TV ghost hunter gets called into a house that actually has ghosts in it; well perhaps (rather than him just being a fraud, which he is). The script is okay, the acting passable (mostly), but the direction lacks any kind of style or substance (and the sets need a set-dresser, the place has a “new house” feel). It feels amateurish and without any kind of drive; and the director doesn’t seem to know what to do with the 2:35 framing.

The House of the Devil (2009)

 ★★★½☆

The much lauded film from Ti West is similar to “Babysitter Wanted” (made the year before) but wholly classier. I have to say though as much as I liked this movie I don’t think it deserves the extremely high praise it tends to get. Its very good, don’t get me wrong, but it is a little derivative; I suppose though that you could legitimately consider this a part of it “retro charm”.
