Talking Board (100yrs Prequel)

TALKING BOARD
FADE IN
SUPER CREDITS:
INT. HOUSE – DAY
A young woman fusses around the living room, puffing pillows and arranging the furniture. She

looks up abruptly, as though she heard something we didn’t.

She makes her way down the small hallway, she pauses halfway and looks down at the floor by

the skirting board.

A pause. Her name is FELICIA, or at least this is what she calls herself.
Shadows move over the frosted glass of the front door but FELICIA gets to it before anyone

knocks.

EXT. HOUSE – DAY
A couple are at the door. The man has his fist raised as if to rap on the window.
The door opens and the three greet each other, the women know each other (they hug) but the

man is a stranger to FELICIA.

FELICIA
Happy Birthday!
INT. HOUSE – DAY
The young couple seat themselves in the living room, the girl, ROSE, is kind of “sweet”

whereas her boyfriend, JAY, is a slovenly type

.

FELICIA
Drinks?
JAY
Got my own.
He reaches into a bag he carries with him, takes out a can of lager and pops the lid.
His girlfriend looks daggers at him.
ROSE
No thank you Fi.
FELICIA draws the curtain in the room and then sits in the chair opposite them.
FELICIA
Before we start, here…
She passes ROSE a small package wrapped in shiny paper.
FELICIA
You’re supposed to be given them as a gift, so it seems appropriate.
ROSE smiles broadly placing the gift beside her, unconcerned JAY takes out his iPHONE and

starts texting someone.

FELICIA turns and picks something up from beside her, it is an ornate board about 12″ by

10″.

FELICIA
We often look to our future unaware that it is sometimes buried in our past… So what they

say is not important, it the place they position us that is.

JAY looks at her blankly then smiles to himself and continues tapping away at his

phone.

FELICIA
Do you know what this is?
She holds up a triangle that measures about two inches a side.
JAY
A planchette.
FELICIA smiles and presents the familiar item known as a Ouija Board…
FELICIA
My grandmother called this a Talking Board…
ROSE bring her chair closer to FELICIA and then, after a moment both women look at JAY, he

looks back at them with his can halfway to his lips.

FELICIA
There must be contact with the board…
JAY shakes his head.
FELICIA
Being here without taking part could be an insult to the spirits…
ROSE
Come on Jay, stop being childish.
JAY rolls his eyes and places his can on the floor before moving closer.
The three people make a little triangle, their knees meeting where the board is placed on

top.

FELICIA
Each place a finger on the top of he planchette, now empty your mind…
ROSE
(quietly)
Thats quick Jay.
FELICIA
(continuing)
..to invite the spirits in.
INT. HOUSE – DAY
WIDEANGLE: The medium begins her “trance state”.
FELICIA
We are engulfed in spirits, they wander around us aimlessly… We are at a crossroads…

There are many…

We begin to CUT BETWEEN THEM as they contact “the dead” (if that is what they are

contacting).

ROSE
(looking around her)
Many?
FELICIA
He wonders why… why did it happen?
JAY
Who?
The planchette begins picking out letters.
FELICIA
W.. I.. L.. William…
JAY and ROSE look confused.
FELICIA
Why are you here William, what is it you wish to say?
The planchette moves across the board. P.. O.. I..
ROSE
Poison?
FELICIA
Poison. You were poisoned?
The planchette moves to the YES printed on the board.
JAY leans in closer.
FELICIA
By whom?
The planchette makes little circles in the middle of the board.
ROSE
What does that mean?
FELICIA
He doesn’t know.
JAY
Who is he?
The planchette begins to move, building up speed.
JAY
F.. A.. T.. H.. E.. R..
The planchette continues to move, spelling out the word again and again. The planchette

suddenly stops. Theres a pause.

The planchette moves again quickly, pointing out three letters.
Y.. O.. U..
The planchette is still for a moment. Then it begins moving again, spelling out LIZABETH.

The planchette is moving in a continuing circle in the centre of the board, making a slow scraping sound.

JAY
Weird. Who is it speaking to?
FELICIA
One question at a time.
JAY looks at FELICIA oddly, not understanding.
ROSE
How did you die?
The planchette spells out PINS.
The planchette spells out POISND.
ROSE
The pins were poisoned.
JAY
(incredulous)
What pins?
The planchette spells out SEWNG.
The planchette moves to YES.
JAY and ROSE continue to ask the board questions, but get no reply. They have fallen “into

the background”.

JAY
When did you die?
The planchette moves in its circle.
ROSE
Why did you die?
The planchette moves in its circle.
INT. HOUSE – DAY
The spell is broken and the CAMERA moves to a WIDEANGLE.
FELICIA
I’m afraid the spirit’s have left us.
The planchette is plucked from the board.
JAY sits back into the sofa and the board itself is hidden away.
JAY
Well, that was utter bollocks.
ROSE punches him hard in the arm.
FELICIA
(to ROSE)
Sometimes that’s what happens, perhaps he was a friend of your fathers, or a long lost

relative.

JAY
That didn’t make any sodding sense, it ignored our questions and answered its own!
ROSE
Maybe someone else was talking?
JAY looks at ROSE as if she was an idiot, he very nearly says the words but FELICIA

interrupts.

FELICIA
Well… Are you going to open it?
She points to the gift beside ROSE on the sofa. ROSE pauses a moment as if she’d forgotten

before she picks it up and carefully unwraps the paper.

Inside is an ornate box.
FELICIA
Open it…
Inside the box is a package of wrapped cloth and inside this is a pack of Tarot cards.
FELICIA
Cut the deck and show us the first card…
ROSE does as she is asked and shows FELICIA the card without seeing it herself.
FELICIA smiles, and ROSE turns to look at the card herself.
It is the DEATH CARD.
INT. THE FLAT – NIGHT
The kitchen is white and new and gleaming. The table is small and round, on it the tarot

cards are placed side by side as if ROSE was playing Patience.

Behind her JAY searches through cupboards.
ROSE turns over a card, its the DEATH CARD again.
ROSE
It means “change” you know…
JAY
Okay Morganna, change some of this stuff into a meal then…
ROSE
(absently)
Do it yourself…
He stops and picks up a can of lager.
ROSE
(with irritation)
And stop that.
He puts the can down.
JAY
(slightly drunk)
I’m not drunk.
ROSE
Would you know the difference anymore? You have too much time on your hands.
JAY
Theres no jobs.
ROSE
Then read a book.
JAY
(quietly)
Thats not entertainment.
ROSE stops and looks up at him seriously.
ROSE
(pointedly)
My father thinks you’re no good, my mother says you’re getting fat, my friends think you’re

a freeloader and at least one acquaintance of mine suspects you’re a borderline alcoholic.

JAY doesn’t answer, he look suitably chastised and a little pathetic if the truth me

known.

ROSE
(changing the subject)
Theres some chicken in the freezer, get it for me would you?
She stands and leaves the table. The CARD’s stares up at us.
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
ROSE sleeps, her mouth slightly open and her hair in her face, strands of it flutter every

time she exhales.

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
JAY sits staring at a blank TV screen, his reflection looks fat and slovenly. He looks away,

half glancing up and then away again.

He pulls a small table over to him, on top of it is a small laptop computer.
CLOSE UP of the screen as he brings up a search engine. In it he types: William, Lizabeth,

Poisoned Sewing… Then after a moments thought adds: Worcester, UK…

A list of results appears, we see brief glimpses of word and phrases on the screen: William

Hamilton, poisoned sewing needles, Detectives, Murder…

JAY clicks on a link and goes to a Wikipedia entry for it. He scans down the page, his eyes

growing confused as he does so. Suddenly he sees something that makes him stop.

It reads: “after some investigation by Detective Thomas Anslow…” The name “Thomas Anslow”

is a link and JAY clicks on it.

He sighs deeply, the look on his face is that of a frightened rabbit.
EXT. HOUSE – DAY
A fist raps on the glass, almost immediately the door opens.
FELICIA
(o.c.)
I’ve been expecting you…
INT. HOUSE – DAY
FELICIA and JAY walk into the front room, FELICIA sits but JAY stands.
FELICIA
Where’s Rose? Did she enjoy her present?
JAY
Is this all crap Fi? All this stuff?
He waves his arms around as if to indicate everything. FELICIA sits silently, she seems

unconcerned with his odd behaviour. There is a frantic feel about him. She sighs and waits, there a few moments

of silence.

JAY
I think I have a problem.
FELICIA
You can’t have a future without a past Jay. Think… What have you done in the last year…

Anything?

JAY sits down, his eyes faraway in thought.
JAY
I’ve drank too much probably.
FELICIA
No, I mean… How have you contributed? It’s hard to be human when you can’t be bothered to

contribute to the race.

JAY sits in silence again as he thinks about this.
JAY
Do you?
FELICIA
(smiling, to herself)
They don’t have to be big contributions.
JAY smiles back and laughs slightly, he feels more than a little foolish. He looks up at her

mischievously.

JAY

(smiling)

Are you a fraud?
FELICIA
No more than the rest of you…
EXT. HOUSE – DAY
The door opens and FELICIA stands at it waiting for JAY. She turns and sees JAY looking down

at the skirting board (where she herself was looking in the first scene).

JAY
What is that?
In a crack between two tiles is a deep hole. JAY leans down and peers into it.
JAY
I can see something in there.
JAY slides a swiss army knife out of his pocket and then opens it, the blade slides behind

the tile and digs around. He levers out a tiny chrome object.

FELICIA
Its a cufflink.
On closer inspection JAY sees that it is, indeed, a cufflink, on it is engraved two letters:

T, A. He peers at FELICIA a moment with a slightly disbelieving look in his eyes.

FELICIA
Keep it, I can’t use it.
JAY doesn’t move, his attention moves from FELICIA to the cufflink.
JAY
Do you know my name Felicia?
FELICIA
Jay…
JAY
No… my last name?
FELICIA shakes her head as if its unimportant.
JAY
Do you know where this is from?
FELICIA shrugs, but she seems unconvincing for some reason. After a moments pause JAY walks

towards front door.

As he steps through the door he half turns.
JAY
My name is Jacob Anders… Does that mean anything to you? Anders?
FELICIA seems slightly impatient with him now, perhaps because he is acting so strange; or

perhaps because of something else?

FELICIA
No, I’m sorry…
JAY looks as if he is going to say more, but…
FELICIA
Give Rose my love… ’Bye…
FELICIA closes the door in his face.
INT. THE FLAT – DAY
Once again Jay is sat in the chair in his living room. Once again he is staring off into the

middle distance blankly.

ROSE
(o.c.)
Did you touch my book last night? There was a scrap of newspaper in it as a bookmark, was

that you?

He stares at a small table in front of him.
JAYS P.O.V.: On the tiny table are two items a large glass of alcohol and the small silver

cufflink.

JAY
Rose? The other day when the board kept saying “father” over and over, you think it

could’ve meant grand-father, or great-grandfather?

ROSE appears at the door, she has a tea-towel in her hand drying a cup.
ROSE
I suppose, why?
JAY
I… I asked who it was, suppose…
ROSE
Maybe…
She leaves the room again and JAY turns his attention back to the table.
JAYS P.O.V.: On the tiny table are two items a large glass of alcohol and the small silver

cufflink. After a few moments JAY’s hand moves into frame and plucks an item from the table… Leaving the glass

of alcohol alone and undrank.
