Tyler’s Legacy
INT. CAR – DAY
A WOMAN sits in the drivers seat, her face is set in stone. She is disapproving and anger bubbles under the surface.
WOMAN
That bloody film!
The MAN who sits in the passenger seat leans his head on his hand in exasperation but he doesn’t answer her.
WOMAN
Are you going to kill yourself over that bloody film?
The MAN half turns and looks at her.
WOMAN
It’s just a movie written by some skinny nihilist…
MAN
(Quietly)
It’s not about the film, or the book.
The WOMAN now half turns to face the MAN.
WOMAN
Then what IS this about?
For the longest moment the MAN just looks at the WOMAN, appraising her. He lets his eyes move over her and she notices this; it makes her uncomfortable.
WOMAN
What are you doing?
MAN
I’m looking at you.
WOMAN
Well, don’t…
MAN
Why?
WOMAN
It makes me uncomfortable.
MAN
Why?
This time the WOMAN doesn’t answer.
The MAN opens the passenger door and the WOMAN looks suddenly frightened.
MAN
Are you going to watch?
WOMAN
No.
MAN
Are you going to wait?
WOMAN
No.
The MAN smiles and, one foot out of the car, he stops and looks at her for one long drawn out moment. This time she doesn’t complain.
Then he gets out, closes the door, and begins to walk away, she watches him and then, upset with herself, she gets out of the car too.
INT. A WAREHOUSE BACKROOM – DAY
Windows are half covered leaving small gaps where light leaks in. Here and there lights are on but it may as well be night-time outside.
A water faucet runs somewhere, the noise echoes.
We see the running water into a basin.
Hands plunge in and wet a shaven head, behind one ear is a swastika tattoo.
The man with the SWASTIKA tattoo stands and runs his hand through his short hair.
In the background two figures enter the room, the MAN and the WOMAN. The WOMAN clutches the MAN’s arm when she sees SWASTIKA.
She mutters to the MAN, but we can’t hear the words clearly, the man says something back, a short and clipped reply.
Without looking over SWASTIKA talks to the newcomers.
SWASTIKA
I wasn’t sure you’d turn up… Most don’t.
SWASTIKA turns and walks over to the couple, he is much larger then the MAN and has an air of dominance over the room.
The MAN looks back without speaking.
SWASTIKA
What did she say to you? You don’t have to answer; it isn’t a condition.
After a moment more the MAN replies, but the WOMAN grimaces slightly as he does.
MAN
She asked me not to do this; she said you’d kill me.
SWASTIKA looks at the WOMAN, and she shrinks – ever so slightly – behind the MAN.
SWASTIKA smiles a surprisingly beatific smile.
SWASTIKA
I don’t kill men my dear Lady; I make them.
The WOMAN’s eyes flicker to the swastika tattoo; and SWASTIKA smiles again.
SWASTIKA
The four arms represent the four directions of Brahma; it means “well-being” and is used, in this case, as a symbol of invitation to the Goddess Lakshmi.
He looks at the MAN.
SWASTIKA
No shoes, socks or shirt.
Then back at the WOMAN as the MAN takes off his shoes, socks and shirt without comment or complaint.
SWASTIKA
The Goddess Lakshmi provides us with physical fortunes, spiritual prosperity and, above all other things… Love… Now tell me… Was that what you expected me to say when you saw this symbol?
The WOMAN shakes her head nervously.
SWASTIKA
No; I didn’t think do.
SWATSTIKA slips off his shirt and the WOMAN looks over his muscled arms and strong back. She looks worried.
SWASTIKA guides the MAN to the middle of the room and both men raise their fists.
SWASTIKA
You know the rules. “Stop” mean stop; you understand?
The MAN nods.
SWASTIKA
Then let’s begin…
The men move closer together and the MAN throws a punch.
INT. CAR – DAY
The empty car sits in the sunlight. Inside are the couple’s accoutrements. A pair of sunglasses here and a ballpoint pen there.
Footsteps can be heard, they get closer and the passenger door opens. The MAN climbs in, his face is bruised and his lip is split. Blood runs from his mouth slightly.
After another moment the woman climbs in the car.
The couple sit without speaking or moving for a moment or two.
The MAN turns and looks at the WOMAN. He lets his eyes move over her. He is slightly out of breath from the bout he’d just had and so his breathing is heavy.
The WOMAN turns to look at the MAN.
MAN
Do you understand?
WOMAN
(Thoughtfully)
I don’t know…
The MAN smiles a happy smile.
MAN
It’s a start…
He reaches over and takes her hand and she smiles.
FADE TO BLACK
