BOUND
EXT. THE STREET – NIGHT
It is late at night and the streets are quiet. We are on the outskirts of the city centre and no lights can be seen in any windows.
A man walks down the road next to a high wall, his hands are pressed deep into the pockets and his scarf is wrapped around the bottom half of his face. His name is EDWARD.
He passes the gate to a park, it is empty.
JOAN
(o.c.)
Excuse me…
EDWARD stops and turns.
In the previously empty gate is a young woman stepping out of the darkness, she is a single step inside the parks grounds. She is dressed elegantly in a long skirt and gypsy top. It is as if she is dressed for summer. For a moment neither speaks.
JOAN
Excuse me.
EDWARD
Hi…
EDWARD takes a step forward, JOAN takes half a step back. She glances at the darkened park behind her and then back to EDWARD.
JOAN
I’m not sure how to say this…
She laughs a self depreciating little laugh. EDWARD doesn’t answer, just waits with a kindly expression on his face.
JOAN
..I need to get home, and…
She looks into the darkness of the park again. It is like a pit.
EDWARD takes a step forward, looking into the darkness rather than at JOAN, JOAN stands her ground this time and follows his gaze.
EDWARD
Its kinda scary in there…
JOAN nods.
EDWARD
Would you like me to walk with you?
JOAN looks undecided, she looks from the darkness to EDWARD and back again as if weighing up which is worse.
EDWARDS face is open and kind, he waits.
JOAN cups her elbows in her hands as if cold.
EDWARD
Would you prefer to use my phone?
He begins to look through his pockets, pulling out a mobile, its screen lighting up. He holds it out to her but she makes no effort to take it.
JOAN
(to herself)
I just live the other side, it wouldn’t take long.
JOAN is speaking to herself, trying to convince herself rather than EDWARD.
JOAN
(to Edward)
Would you mind?
EDWARD
(smiling)
How could I mind?
JOAN steps away from the gate and EDWARD steps through, the two of them walk into the darkness with the space of a few feet between them.
EDWARD
It is dark in here… Do you know the way?
EXT. THE PARK – NIGHT
In the park the light levels are considerably lower, in the background trees are a slightly darker black than the sky behind them.
JOAN
We follow the path…
EDWARD
Are you walking home from work?
(Joan shakes her head)
A party?
JOAN
No, I… Its later than I realised…
EDWARD checks the time on his phone.
EDWARD
Its almost three.
JOAN looks at him as if the time is significant in some way. She looks around nervously, drawing a little closer to him.
JOAN
I live close by, you hear strange things in here sometimes.
EDWARD
Just animals, squirrels or something going through the dustbins.
JOAN
Once I heard a baby cry.
EDWARD
Probably a bird, they can sound just like that sometimes… Creepy.
JOAN
(unconvinced)
Probably.
EDWARD
They’re just stories…
JOAN
(alarmed)
What are?
EDWARD
The things people say; they’re just stories.
JOAN
What do they say?
EDWARD
This isn’t the time… Its creepy enough here.
JOAN
Tell me.
EDWARD
I can meet you sometime, lunch or something… To tell you what they say I mean.
JOAN
No, tell me…
For a moment or two they walk in silence, JOAN watching EDWARD and EDWARD with his gaze lowered.
EDWARD
People do hear things here, see things sometimes too… The story goes that a long time ago

there was an attack, down there at the foot of the hill…

EDWARD points and her gaze follows.
He silently unzips his jacket and puts his phone back in his pocket.
She draws closer to him still, her attention on the far off site, her elbows still cupped in the palms of her hands. EDWARD unwraps his scarf quietly from around his neck and drops a step back.
EDWARD
She screamed but no one admitted hearing her, perhaps no one did. The attacker…
(pause)
Well; it wasn’t a robbery…
He leans closer to her and raises the scarf and lets it fall open, the scarf falls around her shoulders like a shawl.
She flinches slightly but then looks down at the scarf.
EDWARD
When she was found; well…
(pause)
There was a search for her killer, someone was caught but… Some didn’t believe they got

the right person.

JOAN
Had they?
EDWARD
Its just a story. Theres probably no facts in there at all. An overweight Star Trek fan

probably fell off the swings and by morning the story had him as a pretty co-ed attacked by a crazed killer.

JOAN smiles a humourless smile.
JOAN
These things do happen though.
EDWARD
Sure they do, but not as often as people think. I mean; puppies and kittens get born ever

day but people don’t focus on them do they?

JOAN
I don’t like kittens.
EDWARD
(smiling)
Everyone likes kittens, what kind of monster are you?
JOAN
(smiling)
A thin one I hope…
(pointing)
You could see my house from here, if it were brighter.
JOAN’S attention is drawn to something on the edge of her vision.
JOAN
What was that?
EDWARD
Nothing, theres nothing there.
JOAN
What do people see?
EDWARD
They see the girl mostly, though some see a shadow man.
JOAN
The killer?
EDWARD
I’d assume so.
Unconsciously JOAN takes EDWARD’S arm, clutching at his bicep with both hands. EDWARD notices this with a slight smile.
EDWARD
What’s your name?
JOAN
Joan.
Edward
Edward.
JOAN
Your names old fashioned.
EDWARD
So is yours.
EDWARD puts his hand over hers and JOAN looks down at their hands touching, then up into his eyes.
EDWARD
Would you like to meet up sometime?
JOAN
(whistfully)
That would be nice…
EDWARD
Though moonlight does have its benefits.
JOAN
And what does that mean(?)
EDWARD
(backtracking)
I meant with it being romantic…
JOAN
(smiling)
I know what you meant.
In the near distance the steps leading to the far gate can be seen, beyond that the streetlamps shine on an empty street.
EDWARD
Almost there.
JOAN
Yes.
(pause)
Almost there.
EDWARD
So which is your house?
JOAN
Its there, it has a blue door and ornaments in the window.
EDWARD
Is there a garden?
JOAN
(nods)
With a rosebush, the house is filled with the perfume all summer.
JOAN slows down as they near the steps, stopping as EDWARD steps down a few steps. She has a faraway look in her eyes; EDWARD stops and looks up at her.
She pulls away from him and steps back. She is looking pass him
EDWARD
What’s wrong?
JOAN
Many, many things.
She takes another step back and EDWARD walks back up the steps closer to her. He looks over and follows her gaze to the swings on a small play area.
EDWARD
Joan?
JOAN
How does the story end Edward?
EDWARD
The murder? They caught the guy.
JOAN
No, this one…
EDWARD
What do you mean? This one? We’ve only just met, we have all the time in the…
JOAN looks at him silently, her face sad. She slides the scarf from around her neck and holds it out to him. Somewhere we hear a baby cry out. In the bushes nearby something moves and the undergrowth shakes. EDWARD glances to it then back.
He reaches out to take the scarf, and their hands are inches apart. JOAN fades, her hand slipping out of existence as the scarf flutters to the ground.
JOAN
(fading)
Thank you…
Open mouthed and more than a little shocked EDWARD stares at the scarf on the ground in front of him.
Tentatively he reaches over and take it from the ground, for a long moment he doesn’t move.
WIDE ANGLE: He sits alone in the empty park.
EXT. THE STREET – NIGHT
Outside the park the black metal gates seem imposing, around them the street is still.
For a long moment nothing happens, then we see EDWARD as he moves slowly from the park, the scarf in his hands.
In the light from the streetlamps above he looks down the row of houses.
EXT. THE HOUSE – NIGHT
In the glare of the streetlight we TRACK UP TO a house with a blue door. The window is empty, the rose bushes outside it long dead.
In the garden a crooked sign, showing a great deal of weathered age, stands; FOR SALE it states.
EDWARD stands and looks at it sadly, his gaze move from it to the black gates opposite and the park beyond them.
He looks back at the scarf, arranges it and wraps it around his neck.
Sparing the park one more glance he walks away.
EXT. THE PARK – NIGHT
Inside the park we see the silent trees and flowers in the moonlight. The winding paths curving into the darkness.
A child’s slide stands unused, near it are swings.
One particular swing moves; then starts to swing back and forth gently.
We watch this for a while.
