I write constantly, but I post rarely, and the reason why is simple. The greatest proportion of my writing would always be uploaded to a closed works blog, where I was always received well by the small, but attentive followers I had gathered there. This had been my process for a little over ten years, about four thousand words a week, with much of it posted to the blog, moving from short stories to longer work, culminating in a large, multi book story that is reaching a quarter of a million words in size.
I was reaching the final few chapters of the second book in the series when I received an email from one of the moderators of the blogging network on which I posted. It told me that my access would be removed by the end of the month, though the posts themselves might stay until the end of the year.
I had done nothing wrong, and this wasn’t a punitive measure, but a practical one. The system was moving from one supplier to another, and this necessitated the removal of the content.
Why the one network wasn’t built before the destruction of the last is unknown to me, perhaps it was simply a licencing issue, meaning that there was no budget to run both systems side-by-side, and perhaps the databases weren’t compatible and moving the posts between the systems was too difficult.
Or perhaps it was a good opportunity to remove a great deal of posts that were just there, taking up space.
Whatever the reasons, I would effectively be without a home by the end of this month, August 2026, and if I wrote anything there would be nowhere to put it.
I had originally used this website as a landing page to advertise my Kindle and Kobo books, and while those are still on sale, all they contain is now available here on the site for free. I have no head for business, and chasing sales was a no more than a fruitless distraction from what I wanted to do.
From now on, this site will be the primary home for the completed stories, both short and long form, as well as any commentaries, reviews and general thoughts. I’ll probably also include an infrequent post on my YouTube channels, one for stories and the other for gaming, but the main focus will be fiction.
At the moment of writing the site contains about half of what was on the works blog. Most I have saved locally, but some I will have to copy from the blog itself. This will take time, but the alternative is to lose it, and I won’t know what it worth saving unless I wade through it.
